Sales interview guide for graduates. Part III

Posted by: Megan Speet

The previous weeks we started talking about the Sales Interview Process for Graduates and we went through the "Interview Basics - Part I" and the "Questions to consider before your interview - Part II". Today we'll reveal the last question every Graduates needs to prepare before their interview.

Part III - Questions to consider before your interview

Different companies implement a variety of interview processes which may include Telephone Interviews, Face to Face Interviews and Assessment Days.
Regardless of the process they employ, there are a small number of questions you are likely to be asked in one form or another and failure to respond correctly will prevent you moving forward in the interview process.
It is imperative that you familiarize yourself with these questions and sample answers.

3 - What do you know about our company?

It is imperative that you research a potential employer thoroughly before you attend an interview. This can include researching their website (not just the „about us‟ page!), obtaining a job description or company brochure, researching any awards the company may have been given (i.e. Fast Track 100, Best Companies to Work For, Reseller of the Year etc). You would be amazed how many candidates are stumped when an interviewer asks "What do you know about our company?" Employers want to employ people who take their career choices seriously. Therefore, you cannot under prepare!

Key topics to focus on include:

  • When the company was established
  • What is their core product/service and who do they provide it to. (i.e. Software for the banking sector, Office Supplies for small companies)
  • What doe their product or service actually do!
  • How big is the organisation and where are they located (ie UK base, European, Global)
  • What are the Company‟s core values
  • What awards has the company received

Other Questions you may be asked at Interview:

  • How long have you been looking for a sales position?
  • Have you had any other sales interviews? If no, why not?
  • What do you think the job of a sales person involves on a day to day basis?
  • What is your best achievement to date and why?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
  • Why is money/career progression important to you?
  • What do you actually plan on doing with your money?
  • Sell me a pen/holiday/car etc. (Please see below for some advice on selling)
